Why Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage makes club history in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight berth.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official full international.
Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club pursue future success.
Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.
"The manager treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
