The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
