California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run
The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections are over.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," the governor commented when asked about contemplating a White House bid post the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."
The governor's time in office as California's leader ends in early 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he noted that any choice is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he added.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
Newsom has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the Trump administration, using his digital presence and advocating for a proposition that would expand Democratic congressional seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This action has made him a target from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a Sunday appearance on a major news network. The secretary announced intentions to cut taxpayer dollars from the state and warned suspending the authority to issue CDLs.
"I'm about to pull $160 million from the state," Duffy stated, after a recent tragic collision in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused fatalities and injured individuals.
The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had renewed the driver's employment multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a CDL under federal law.
The transportation secretary had earlier stated he was blocking $40m from the state for failing to implement language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp national statutes," his administration retorted in a recent release countering the funding warnings. "For now, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
Public Opinion and Future Prospects
A this month's study found that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters believed that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has increased to an mean of about one-third from around 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an typical level of previous highs to under 40%.
Earlier this year, the governor commented while visiting several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his future for 2028.
He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.
"The idea that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the American people."
